“… The Walt Disney Company has decided to take a deep breath and push Pixar’s Toy Story 3 with all of its might. An animated film has never won the top prize — only two, Beauty and the Beast and Up, have ever been nominated — and Disney, in a decision that went all the way to Robert A. Iger, the media giant’s chief executive, has decided that Toy Story 3 should finally be the one.”
i’m so behind this i don’t even know what to do with myself.
I’ll make the campaign posters and organize the bake sale.
Meredith: “Let’s have a look at a place that is called ‘Entenhausen’ in German Disney comics — its original name of course is ‘Duckburg’.”
Meredith: this is like a 20 page academic discourse on Duckburg, Shelby
I love everything in the world
Shelby: cannot stop laughing
Meredith: I would imagine his thesis is something like
Life, as presented in this narrative, somewhat resembles a natural disaster in its chaotic nature - such as a hurricane.
A variety of modes of transport - racecars and aeroplanes, as well as newer forms of technology, such as lasers, make things speed by at such a rate that they are difficult to record or remember.
It is possible one might encounter any number of strange occurrences in this metropolis. The shifts of space and time lead to many unsolved threads of story, including past events, that can be rewritten by the inhabitants at will.
However, the nature of the city is one of constant threat around every corner - unfamiliar characters, especially, who often interact with our protagonists in subtle ways, not making themselves known.
In the end, as presented to us by the author, there is only one way to remain safe in this urban danger - keeping in one’s possession the tailfeathers of a small waterfowl.
Woo hoo, hoo.
Shelby: good luck with your paper! YOU CAN DO IT!! WOO
just remember that life is sometimes like a hurricane
The one Whedon show I feel capable of talking about on the internet?! So, I will do that now!
Favorite Episode: Out Of Gas. Flashbacks! Danger! Family bonding! Kaylee being sexually aroused by machinery!
Least Favorite Episode: The Train Job is mostly pretty boring.
Favorite Character: Inara Serra. #unpopularopinions I love all of the things she chooses to be, and she is so confident and elegant and witty. I wish we’d gotten more of her backstory, although I enjoyed making up my own for a while there.
Least Favorite Character: The hands of blue guys are super scary. There’s nobody I really actively loathe, and I think this might have been the first show for me where that was the case?
Favorite Ship: Wash/Zoe and Kaylee/Inara.
My Favorite Quote:
"That girl is a witch."
"Yeah, but she’s our witch. So cut her the hell down."
Two Reasons It’s Awesome:
1. Created family in spaaaaace!
2. It ended before it could go the places it shouldn’t have gone to. Unpopular opinion again, but it ended right when it should have.
i did not realize your hate was that strong, although i have myself quit things out of rage as well. how about lost? :D?
Hahahaha, I feel like hate is maybe the wrong word? Exhaustion is probably the right word. I still love many of the characters and episodes but find myself completely unable to talk about Whedon shows, except Firefly, in any kind of reasonable way anymore. It makes me a little sad!
But anyway: LOOOOOLST.
Favorite Episode: Wow, this show had a lot of episodes and I watched them all? That is a fact that is true. I guess my favorite is any of the early season Kate flashbacks, because I love her, or The Constant, because it is all feelingsy and shit and pretty solid writing for a Lolst episode. Also, I will copy @alorrainea and say Not In Portland for dorky!Juliet.
Least Favorite Episode: Anything about Jack and his feelings, but most notably the one where he pretty much kicks his dad off the wagon by being a terrible person.
Favorite Character: Kaaaaaaaatherine Anne Austen! SUCK IT, HATERS. Also, Claire, her girlfriend, and DR. JULIET MOTHAFUCKIN’ BURKE/CARLSON. As far as dudes…Hurley and Miiiiiiles.
Least Favorite Character: The King of Jears.
Favorite Ship: Kate/Claire!! I don’t know, I was overcome with Island Girlfriend Fever and it seems to be a chronic condition. Also, Sawyer/Juliet.
My Favorite Quote: Probably most things Hurley has said.
Two Reasons It’s Awesome:
1. Goddamn, everyone is so fucking attractive. Walkin’ on the beach, being hot, getting in fights, being hot, doing inexplicable things, being hot…
2. Hawaii is also very pretty! Uh…I really liked what I thought they were doing, at the beginning, with a bunch of strangers becoming a makeshift family, but that ended up not happening…
Hahahaha I apologize for my total ambivalence about Lost. XD
Favorite Episode Movie: This award would have to go to, and I’ll just give you all a moment to gasp in shock, clutching the edges of your chairs…Kiki’s Delivery Service. My favorite movie OF ALL TIME, forever. I just…I internalized this film at an early age, I think it was the second Ghibli film I ever saw, and it stands up to rewatching over and over again, it’s never lost any of its magic. It’s about finding your own home and making your own way and feeling alone in a city full of people but how unexpected kindness is a thing that is always there if you just look. It is about growing up and finding a circle of support and friendship, but most importantly about finding out who you are, and how once you know what matters to you it can carry it with you as strength, strength that others can use too.
And it is full of women doing awesome and different things, and teaching and learning from each other. And people constantly laughing in delight, and making things. I find something new every time I watch this movie, and every time, it makes me feel better about the world and my own place in it.
Least Favorite Episode Movie: Ugh, this is like kicking a puppy in the face, picking a least favorite Ghibli film. But of the ones I’ve seen (and I’ve seen most of them, and all of the big ones) Howl’s Moving Castle. It just sort of…loses the plot, in there, after a while? And also, having read the book, nothing else can compare in my mind. I hate to be that person, especially since I read the book AFTER the movie, but just…I think the film could have been a lot better than it was. Not necessarily closer to the book, just tighter and more compelling.
My Favorite Character: So I don’t spend this whole meme just talking about Kiki, I am going to talk about some of my other favorite characters here.
Fio Piccolo! Funny, crazy clever and talented, hardest damn worker in the world, not afraid to give grumpy porcine bounty hunters shit and get them to cheer up a little, awesome hair, sort of just does her own thing and rolls with it. MAKING ALL THE PIRATES FALL IN LOVE WITH HER, LOLOLOL FOREVER.
Taeko Okajima! Introspective, self-aware, considerate, sometimes frightened to go after what she wants but in the end able to make the right choices for herself and her life. I feel like Taeko is very different from other Studio Ghibli heroines, although there are a lot of similar qualities too. Obviously, she’s older, but it’s more that so much of who she is and who she was, as a child, is internal, privy only to her. She is someone you really believe would love life on a farm, because that kind of environment suits her personality.
Shizuku Tsukishima! I love that she is not particularly good at school, that she’s a loyal friend even when it’s tough, that she sort of does her own thing but still worries about doing her own thing, that she figures out what it is that makes her happiest and dives into it headfirst and works her butt off to be successful. I love that she’s not afraid to explore, and to imagine.
My Least Favorite Character: I AM PRETTY FUCKING TERRIFIED OF THAT GIANT BABBY IN SPIRITED AWAY.
My Favorite Ship: Sheeta/Pazu! Aang and Katara on an airship, basically. EDITED TO ADD SEIJI/SHIZUKU HOW DID I FORGET THEM OMG GUYS I AM SO SORRY!! <3 <3 <3 And also Taeko/Toshio.
My Favorite Quote: Kiki’s whole conversation with Ursula at their sleepover, including…
"I decided to become an artist when I was about your age. I liked to draw so much, I almost hated to go to bed. And then one day, all of a sudden, I couldn’t draw anything. Everything I drew, I didn’t like. I realized that my art up to then was a copy of someone else, things I had seen somewhere. I decided I had to discover my own style."
"It’s nice to be a witch, isn’t it? I like the idea— to be a witch, to be an artist, to be a baker…It’s an energy bestowed by the gods or someone, right? Though thanks to it, we do have to suffer at times…"
Two Reasons It’s Awesome:
1. Consistently amazing quality and heartwarming stories you never get tired of!
Oh man, I don’t know if I am actually capable of this! I turned off the Buffyverse part of my heart in a fit of quiet rage so long ago. I could try, but pretty much I would just be like, Fred and Gunn’s faces are still two faces I enjoy pressed together? I’m sorry. I have a lot of Buffy and Angel stress. :| D-do you think you could ask another fandom? I feel bad and still want to answer a question for you!
Favorite Episode: Episode 13, Scenery With A Rocket. It’s the episode that took me from “damn, I really like this show a whole lot” to “these characters actually mean the world to me, how about that”. It’s low-key and sweet, often funny and a little heartbreaking, and FULL OF HOSHINOS. I think it articulates very well what the show considers important in a tight little package, which is good to have going forward as things get darker.
Least Favorite Episode: I don’t really care about The Lunar Flying Squirrels. Sorry, Moon Ninjas.
My Favorite Character: For a long time I wasn’t sure, but it soon became totally clear: Ai Motherfucking Tanabe is my forever space cowgirl and I my little heart is overwhelmed with love for her at most times. She is ridiculous and naive and brave and hard-working and idealistic and awkward and so full of genuine, clear-eyed affection for the whole world. &Tanabe;
My Least Favorite Character: Ugh, Colin Clifford, when Tanabe punched you in the face I clapped. Cheng-Shin is an asshole, but I actually find him interesting, so I don’t think he counts.
My Favorite Ship: THE FIRST TOY BOX! Oh, you mean romantic pairing? *drumfill* ~*~Ai/Hachi forever~*~ I could write essay after essay about how much I want to press their stupid, socially stunted faces together for ALL TIME. Also, uh, ahahaha, @TheSockdolager and I sort of invented a crackship that we are now both SUPER INVESTED IN: Hachi’s little brother Kyutaro and Nono, Hachi’s 12-year-old Lunarian friend. They…never meet in canon…but they SHOULD. And then they should…get married…
My Favorite Quote: My favorite quote is actually super spoilerly, so here is one that is not so much.
"Where do you think the limit is between Earth and space? If you ask me, the boundary doesn’t exist. This world has no boundaries. I find that wonderful." Two Reasons It’s Awesome:
1. It’s incredibly realistic and interesting sci-fi with real narrative integrity and great worldbuilding.
2. The characters are among most goddamn lovable bunch of dorks I have ever had the pleasure of watching. And everyone’s story is important! And…Toy Box forever!!
If I were to list my favorite fanvids of all time, I’m pretty sure this one would be somewhere in my top five. Even if I consider some of the relationships featured in it to be more like awesome platonic relationships than as femslashy ones.
Imma flip this question back at you because it is SUCH A GOOD QUESTION but a response has just been sitting half-formulated in my drafts because I am terrible.
Describe your life as a Digidestined. What is your crest? Who is your partner? What other characters are your BFFs? What kind of shenanigans do you get up to? Please be as realistic as possible, like, what would actually happen if you were dropped into this ridiculous universe as opposed to your idealized version of events.
Well, I definitely think I would have a Palmon. I have thought this since childhood! I don’t particularly like plants more than the average lady, but I feel like it would be a good fit somehow. Hopefully they are all as adorable and goofy as Mimi’s, like, that is a species trait or something. I would water her and like, make her dirt and fertilizer lunches and we would play pranks by dangling things from her vines while she pretended to be a tree, like fruit, and then jerking it away when someone tries to grab it.
I am usually pretty good at rolling with new situations, so I feel like the initial shock of waking up in the Digital World wouldn’t be too bad. I would most likely pretend to be really preoccupied with finding a way to get out of there, but secretly all OH SHIT MY CHILDHOOD FANTASY OF BEING DROPPED INTO ANOTHER WORLD HAS COME TRUE, THIS IS AWESOME!! But you know, practical necessities like food, and shelter, also important! So I would bounce back and forth a lot. But if we’re talking 02, where you can pretty much go back and forth at will, I would pretty much just be :D :D :D all the time, and would spend all of my free periods in the Digital World, neglecting my homework.
Friends: I feel like I would get along really well with any of the 02 kids, but particularly Miyako and I would be BFF. From Gen 1, Mimi and Jou, we would all hang together. For some reason I think Sora would take a long time to warm up to me, though? idk.
I would have ZERO PATIENCE for Matt in reality, just as I do in fiction, so we would not get along but not really let anyone else know we don’t get along.
My crest would be Sincerity, or Kindness!
(Hahahaha, these are definitely SOME THINGS I JUST SAID. Wow.)
AND SCAR IS MAY’S ICE DANCING PARTNER!!!1 BECAUSE NOTHING IN THE UNIVERSE WILL EVER BE BETTER THAN SCAR DOING TWIZZLES AND WEARING RIDICULOUS ICE DANCING COSTUMES. OR MAY COULD BE AN INDIVIDUAL FIGURE SKATER TOO!1 WHICH…
I ENJOY ALL OF YOUR CHANGES AND ADDITIONS AND AGREE WITH THEM WHOLEHEARTEDLY!! IN FACT, THEY WERE CHOICES I WOULD HAVE PERHAPS MADE MYSELF HAD I BEEN FOCUSING MORE.
DID YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR FMA OLYMPIC AU IN MIND OR WAS THIS A HINT AT ME RE: BIATHLON AU I JUST MADE UP.
WAIT THIS SOUNDS SUPER CONCEITED. WHATEVER. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR OLYMPIC FMA AU.
YOUR BIATHALON AU INSPIRED IT, FOR SURE, AND IN FACT I AM NOT MENTIONING ROY AND RIZA IN THIS PRECISELY BECAUSE THAT WAS SO PERFECT AND IS WHAT I IMAGINE THEY ARE UP TO IN THIS AU AS WELL.
But mostly, I just want Olympic AUs for everything ALL THE TIME. And Winter Olympics »> ALL OTHER OLYMPICS.
The landlocked, formerly conflict-ridden European country of Amestris is ridiculously excited: after finally getting their shit together, they have been chosen as the host of the 20something Winter Games!
The Elric Brothers: While they have become media darlings (unwillingly, especially on Ed’s part), because of their TRAGIC BACKSTORY that television news milks for all its worth, the Elrics are legitimately talented. Both are skaters: their mother, Trisha, was a gold medalist in figure skating, but retired after becoming pregnant with Ed. While Al followed in his mother’s footsteps, Ed chose hockey instead. This was also possibly to piss off his dad, though nobody could ever be sure. Ed is determined to WIN ALL THE MEDALS, while Al has a more chill approach to competition. (He’s just really happy to be there!)
Also helping out on Team Amestris are Ed’s coach, legendary women’s hockey star Izumi Curtis, who still plays despite a serious injury, Winry Rockbell, who is a genius at repairing any kind of sporting equipment, but particularly renowned and sought-after for making the best skates on the continent.
Although they have the home team advantage, Amestris’s biggest competition is Team China, who are exceptionally strong in almost every area. In the Olympic Village, Ed meats Ling Yao when he steals his spot in line to get some food after a particularly grueling practice, he is never forgiven. Ed also gives him a lot of shit about his family background: his dad is on the Olympic committee, Ed thinks he bought his way into the games.
Ling competes in a variety of freestyle skiing events, and has been training since he was very, very young. He wants nothing more than to get more medals than his number one competition…which doesn’t really made sense, because said competition doesn’t even COMPETE IN THE SAME SPORT…
It doesn’t matter what his real name is, everyone calls him GREED, because, well. BOOM BOOM, STEALIN’ WINS, WRECKIN’ SHIT UP, HE’S THE MOST AWESOMEST SNOWBOARDER AMESTRIS HAS EVER SEEN.
Lanfan is Ling’s coach. She’s a mighty talented skier in her own right (particularly in aerials), but she gave up her own dreams after her grandfather, who had been coaching Ling his whole life, passed away. She’d been doing more and more of his work herself as he got older, anyway, although a lot of people are surprised by how close in age she and Ling are.
(AND UH, PERHAPS THESE THREE HOOK UP AFTER THE OPENING CEREMONIES WHILE THEY ARE ALL A LITTLE DRUNK AND EXCITED, AND SPEND THE REST OF THEIR TIME IN AMESTRIS ~*~FIGURING OUT THEIR FEELINGS~*~ FOR EACH OTHER WHILE TRYING NOT TO GET TOO DISTRACTED??)
May Chang is an ice dancer, and Ling’s half-sister, although they’ve successfully avoided being connected in the press. She is known for her speed and grace, but struggles with homesickness and the pressure to perform exceptionally in her first Games, as the youngest in her sport. May is usually found practicing at the same time as Al, but that’s totally a coincidence. Eventually they begin a ~secret relationship~, learn a lot from each other, and start competing in pairs together at the next Olympics!
ANYWAY THAT WAS MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT MY FMA OLYMPIC AU.
While So Weird may have ended when you were 13, the seasons with Fi ended before that, and as Annie doesn't count because she is the worst, I think that could still qualify as a childhood show.
Top five shows intended for teens or children you watched when you were no longer in your childhood?
Aww, Annie was okay! She was…sweet! But Fi was AMAZING, and my hero. ~*~Fiona Phillips~*~
2. Spectacular Spider-Man, which, why haven’t more people watched this? It is INCREDIBLY, incredibly good.
what was your first anime, and as a follow-up, was it awesome?
The first anime I watched that I consciously recognized as anime was, IIRC, either My Neighbor Totoro or…Magical Princess Gigi? The former is one of the greatest movies of all time! The latter is definitely a thing, that exists!
